The Need
The Roncalli Newman Center was built in the early '60's, as a meeting and worship space for the Catholic students of the University of Wisconsin--La Crosse. It has served the students well over the last forty years, but as would be the case with any strucure, even to keep things the same you must give them constant attention. A coat of paint, a rewaxed floor, a replacing of worn carpets. In the last ten years we have added an elevator, updated the bathrooms, replaced our aging boiler, and, most recently, renovated the parish offices on the northwest corner of the building. Now the most used and vital space at the Center is in need of attention: our chapel.
One of the most significant and formative experiences in the life of a parish community is the process of building or renovating a church. The building is a container that protects, shelters, and shapes how we think about ourselves ... and how we think about God. The "up-close" and "in the round" feel of the Newman chapel has told us God is found in the human, the intimate, and the small, as well as the lofty, the grand, and the overwhelming.
People most of us do not even know shaped the space in which we meet God here. Now it is our privilege ... our responsibility ... to attend to the space for college students not yet born. Come, learn about our Renovation adventure.
